Build your first syllables

Korean syllables are made by combining a consonant and a vowel. When ㄱ and ㅏ come together, they make 가.

ㄱ plus ㅏ makes 가

Where the vowel goes

Some vowels are tall, like ㅏ and ㅓ. They go to the right of the consonant: 가, 거.

Other vowels are flat, like ㅗ and ㅜ. They go below the consonant: 고, 구.

ㄱ plus ㅗ makes 고

A syllable always starts with a consonant

A syllable that begins with a vowel sound uses ㅇ as a placeholder. In this position, ㅇ has no sound. So 아 sounds the same as ㅏ.
